After the meteoric rise of the “populist moment” in the West between 2008 and 2018, “traditional” politics seems to have halted its decline. Populism and the establishment have found a form of coexistence, influencing each other in a struggle that is no longer existential. But an instrument of politics has unexpectedly emerged reinvigorated: the party. Widely declared dead, certainly changed from its twentieth-century form, it has nonetheless proven to be the only true organised tool for making an impact on reality and political events. Through the study of some emblematic examples from recent Italian political life (such as the M5S, Lega of Salvini, the “Sardine” among others), this research explores the reasons behind this genuine (and unexpected) resilience.
